Cypriot National eID becomes pre-notified

The first step in the mutual recognition journey of the Cypriot National eID has been achieved.

SpearIT is pleased to announce that the first Cypriot electronic identification (eID) scheme has now been pre-notified in the eIDAS Cooperation Network. SpearIT has been involved in this journey since 2020 by conducting the readiness assessment of the draft eID scheme and continues with the fulfillment of all prerequisites for the pre-notification of the Cypriot eID scheme, aiming at Level Of Assurance (LoA) High, in accordance with the eIDAS Regulation (EU 910/2014).

With this achievement, the first big step in the mutual recognition of the Cypriot eID among Member States is made, allowing the issuance of an electronic identity to Cypriot citizens, equivalent to the physical, biometric identity, as well as the use of a qualified electronic signature for signing digital documents with security and legal validity.

At the national level, the Cypriot eID has already been implemented. The eID is issued and operated by the Qualified Trust Service Provider JCC Payment Systems, while the overall ownership and supervision of the eID scheme is under the Department of Electronic Communications of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy.

The eID scheme notification is a specific procedure under the eIDAS Regulation, pursuant to which a Member State notifies its eID scheme to the European Commission so that it becomes recognised and accepted by the other Member States. After a thorough review process among Member States, the successfully notified eID scheme becomes mutually recognized, enabling a seamless, convenient, and secure user experience in online, cross-border transactions, electronic signing of digital documents, as well as the potential for developing new electronic services.
